Casio G-SHOCK GMW-B5000D-1: the 1983 square rebuilt in full metal

In 2018 Casio transformed its original square G-SHOCK design into a solid steel timepiece without abandoning its shock-resistant principle, using fine resin buffers and a forged metal exterior.

What to know

The GMW-B5000D-1 is one of the most important redesigns in the history of G-SHOCK. Unveiled in 2018, it reinterprets the 1983 DW-5000C's recognizable square form in stainless steel. The change is more than cosmetic: a tougher, heavier case has different shock behaviour from the light, flexible urethane of the original, which demanded a new internal structure.

Casio developed a construction in which fine-resin cushioning elements sit between the stainless-steel bezel and inner case, isolating the movement against impacts. Engineers also redesigned the case-to-bracelet connection to disperse shocks across three attachment points. The stainless-steel bracelet carries recessed detailing in homage to the molded pattern on the original resin strap, preserving a visual signature while using an entirely different material.

The solid screw-lock case back uses a wear-resistant DLC treatment. Production involves forging, cutting and polishing to create a combination of brushed planes and polished beveled edges, turning the G-SHOCK's once purely utilitarian protection into visible metal finishing.

Modern functions accompany the historic shape: Tough Solar power, Multi Band 6 radio time adjustment, Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, and a high-contrast STN LCD. The 200-metre water resistance and full metal construction make it a practical digital instrument rather than a purely nostalgic tribute.

The GMW-B5000D-1 establishes an important design lesson. A watch can change its entire material system while keeping the geometry that made it recognizable. The engineering underneath, not merely the square outline, is what qualifies this model as a real G-SHOCK.
